g.i.disco - an 80s history of cold war s hottest music in west-germany berlin local dj heroes kalle kuts and daniel w. best a.k.a. g.i.disco have compiled an excellent 80s soul, funk, r & b and disco selection. it combines representative music of that time with informative liner notes about the german historical background (which also is an important part of 20th century s world history), international artist quotes and worldwide renowned art by berlin based photographer frank thiel to an unique history lesson and listening experience. soul, funk and r&b from the us became a worldwide dance and clubbing movement during the 70s when it turned disco. in the late 70s and 80s more and more new electronic instruments like synthesizers and drum machines were added to the horn riffs and piano licks, bringing the funk back on the dance floor while still leaving it s soul untouched. although a global success story, it played an interesting role especially in the german experience. lp comes in gatefold sleeve.

solid as it should be, a chuggy serious drive is shown, combined with well constructed raw hats loops. a very smooth disco influence is noticed on the vocal cuts and a funky >lead padding< in the background. the hotcomer leland mcwilliams is showing his interpretation of the track in a funky and tribal way. percussions and a shakers, combined with a funky baseline and a short house lead.

velvet: a great techno classic gets the full c series overhaul. bang up to date and a perfect floor filling package. tribal percussion rattles along with a speaker throbbing bassline which drops seamlessly into that well known synth from the original. the main lead is then tinkered, wrapped around, and flipped to breathe new life and give us a new shade of velvet. intergalactic:doesnt need much of an introduction, the title pretty much gives it away. the beastie boys go techno! another dance floor smash and grab here beastie style. vocals used effectively.. not too much not too little but with the fused with the rest of the track it brings out so much energy, the percussion, the toms in the background, the stabs throughout the track makes everyone in the room jump!

nicolas reinbold and david lamant, have been studying and playing electro music for many years, but in 2009, they decided to link their musical knowledge and background to create a new musical project, called the outsiders. in order to make their project alive, they also created a label called elektro korp records. to date, they have made a vinyl call evaporate e.p. that feature two tracks from them and a remix from perc (c.l.r., drumcode, perc trax) they have pressed those tracks in limited edition (500 marbled vinyls).

shadow sync are back with two new bomb tracks with a fresh techno touch for their fifth release on krd. the imploded beats of theia hit the dance-floor like a meteor shower, accents in reverse weave the rhythm supported by background reverberations. a grooving tr-909 complete all. jitter is a tribal repetitive trip that arises from a genetically modified marimba (courtesy of our beloved 8-bit mirage). reversed hi-hats, hypnotizing delays, bit-reduced accents infect the main synth line making it sick: disorientation guaranteed!

here we have a double a-side 12-inch, with an intriguing new development of the secondo sound. still banging, still aimed at the club but with a sense of maturity and laid-backness, that the previous secondo material for dreck records might not have been centred around. the whole outlook has become more house orientated and we are very excited about this new mixture of the secondo splice-funk with the steadiness of early 90s house generating its own idiosyncratic sound. on the a-side, i think im gonna likeestablishes the housey mood of the 12straight off. a brief vocal sample is dotted over a relaxed rhythm until a break mid-track introduces the second half to its full extent and bloom. ædoktor panglosson the b-side continues with the mid-tempo flavour set out by the aside and is defined by a steady build up towards a disco sample beautifully placed towards the end of the track, where a heavy bass line cuts short the euphoria of disco strings. the sampling and references in both tracks have been pushed to the background and mentioning any of them would not do this exciting new material any justice. its all fresh!

rick wade, the self-entitled new duke of cologne returns to cologne based yore imprint, the real dukes in town. the detroit based deep house soldier rick wade has been around for a long time and has been releasing deep house tracks long enough to warrant the ‘old master’ title (all the way back in 1993, he built his own studio and established his harmonie park label), and now he returns of the mighty duke of cologne with a three-track yore follow-up to his fabulous 2008 full-length the good, the bad and the deep.it takes mere seconds for the title cuts deep bass-and-drum pulse to work its magic. driven by a slinky backbeat, the tune gets its skanky kick from a wah-wah guitar figure in the background and the silky allure of classic disco-era strings.

the in the box e.p. is a fine example of niedermeier & whiteheads no-nonsense style, combining melodic, muscular grooves with deep basses and balearic percussion, the e.p. is a slice of raw tech and deep house class. with a relentless funky beat, in the box pays homage to classic tech-house form whilst maintaining a tracky musical edge that highlights the pairs dj background. with their penchant for diversity, short fuse is something truly unique, quirky pads and filtered fx gives this track a deep house vibe whilst a smoky lead ensures the techy theme is maintained. tales of old has all the essences of modern deep techno, it rolls along with a straightforward beat and a clean unpretentious production flavour. the simple vocal stabs and smooth fx hits are driven along by a wonderfully deep timpani that shakes some air but never interferes with the warm, round sub bass pining the groove together. lastly is out of place, a deep grooving track with an aggressive manner. through a series of dynamic peaks and troughs, technoid percussion and funky vocal hits, this track provides an appropriate addition to this perfect release

heres a mighty steamroller of a track by funky californian cole medina, co-founder of the house arrest label, that aims to put the ghetto back in house music, and esteemed producer with a jazz background championed by the haute-volee of current disco and house djs. while his slo-mo bee-gees cut-up is still the center-piece of numerous latenight/ early morning sleaze hours worldwide, >red hot< is quite another beast: footstomping peak-time action with dangling funk guitar and dubby brass stabs. finally dropping after todd terje already included it in his resident advisor almost two years back with an additional stellar the mole ( wagon repair, philpot ) on the support. canadas funkdoobiest reconstructs it in a jacking, midtempo wild pitch manner around a dirty fuzzy bassline plus cut-up beat and wah-wah guitar that will slap you silly. this hurts so good!

for their first release in 2010, the infamous label kanzleramt will team up with suol for this split release called nip split : 01. as the 01 might already tell you, this isnt a one time thang ... this is just the beginning of a looooong relationship to come! on the kanzleramt side we find suol label owners chopstick & johnjon (true, its starting to get a bit complicated here) with the track infidelity that is already a sure shot in the recordbags of the suol and kanzleramt family. infidelity gives us a sneak peak on the guys background, with its sample based theme and the ruff programing. there might have been one or two hip hop parties that the two attended in the past. give this one a spin and the groove will show you, how much impact this lovely house tracker gonna have on the floors. on the flip side mr. kanzleramt himself aka heiko borrowed us his artist peter horrevorts for a dancefloor monster!

for the first release in 2010 electric minds present ly sander & michael j collins. with ly residing in geneva and michael in denver, it was soundcloud that brought the pair together through an appreciation of each others productions. independently both producers have a solid background in music. electric minds welcome both producers and look forward to the impact their ep will have on the ever changing house music community. all three tracks are mood inspiring productions, subtle and simple in places they will appeal to those that like their music deep and with a touch of soul.

jaffa surfa is a well known dj in hungary with a strong and long aritstic background where music has always been the main part of it.. hes done already releases on universal vibes, devoted and off, showing a great variety of styles into his productions. we have been strucked by his track >diskoz< and his strong disco vein! this track is a magic mixture of techno house elements dropped into our immmaginary view of 80s electronic uncontaminated disco.

beroshimas cosmic flight comes as a detroit shaped pumpin techno clubstomper. deep synths going hand in hand with fragile background strings. a reminiscence of glorious techno evergreens. hawkinson puts his fingers on franks original mix and creates a deep atmospheric track. minimal meets deep techno. a state of the art production and dancefloor burner. the cosmic flight ep is the first one to be taken from the upcoming beroshima album.

italian duo davide zeta and claudio basile moved to london from milan in 96 & 97 respectively, they quickly achieved themselves their individual niches in londons spotlight as promoter/dj duo, moving into production with their first official releases in 2008, claudio as a solo artist, and davide as part of slimboystwo. when they finally joined forces for their first release as dzeta n basile gained lots of attention from different record labels throughout uk and europe. claudios sound comes from a progressive background and davides has more of a house feeling. the result is a unique blend of hypnotic grooves, deep vibes and percussive/house beats, which is the trade mark of their style. after just more than a year running, with dj performances in londons most important venue and 10+ singles released, the future in 2010 is looking bright.

this new collaboration between two of cadenzas finest talents makes its official debut on mobilee with black shoes, a cut that pops, crackles, and snaps like youd never believe. dance floor ready yet unwilling to sacrifice an explicit focus on the details, black shoes pulsates with bass while suggesting a kind of lightness as whispered and fragmented voices hiss and murmur in the background. the melodics, which give off the feel of being in constant flux, provide a nice contrast to the intensely regularized bass drum while simultaneously meshing with the popping percussion that guide the track along its course. breakdowns filled with the sounds of static and 8-bit provide a nice experimental touch to this track that works equally well as a late-night romp as it does on the headphones. b-side speech also gives off a stuttered feel but is even more blippy and fragmented than its counterpart while migrating towards a more jacking vibe. brito and toro compliment this fractured sound with extensive use of vocal samples—both spoken and sung—that, while incomprehensible, lock in seamlessly with the overall feel of the track. melody here references both vintage sounds and traditional minimalism with the end result being a fusion of the two that is truly extraordinary.

greg schappert aka donor (brooklyn, ny) and tom russell aka truss (london, uk) first came into contact sometime towards the end of 2006. it didnt take long to realize that they had an immediate understanding of one anothers musical background and desired direction. finding that connection has resulted in the two continuing to work together on many joint projects, varying their style between more deep and hypnotic minimal techno to the more driving industrial style techno that they both grew up listening to.

bottin, aka william bottin makes music only an italian can make... probably. take a youth spent against a background of old italian giallo soundtracks, some john carpenter film music, add in late 70s italo disco influences, add a touch of free, some easy west coast vibe and a smattering of kitsch. that just about half describes bottin.

detroit based multi instrumentalist jimmy edgar brings his unique electronic vision to items & things for the labels keenly anticipated fourth release. edgars versatility is well documented with influences ranging from jazz, funk and r&b through to chicago house and of course detroit techno. for this outing he puts his distinctive r&b tinged electronica to one side, laying down some timeless acid house grooves that pay homage to the founding fathers of the genre. the sublime techno soul of the title track funktion house kicks off the 4-track ep with sweet chord stabs and laid back laser sweeps dominating the intro. a gentle yet infectious background melody thatll pull bodies to the dancefloor like bees to honey completes the summertime vibe with each element effortlessly evolving as edgar applies subtle ring shifts and delays to the down tempo groove.

rebolledo is an artist from xalapa, mexico, who is very much part of the comeme family of latin american artists. he s been around from the early days when he used to provide music for the buenos aires based bumbumbox street parties. so far he s had tracks on previous comeme releases, notably pitaya frenesi, but this is his first full release on his own. rebodello is the consummate comeme artist, with a quirky sense of humour, a unique latin american approach to dance music and a lean lo-fi approach to track making that is built to cut through on any sound system. lead track >guerrero< follows in comemes now established strange sense of humour, guerrero means warrrior and is a track about a >guerrero< who comes out at night and dresses in leather, it s all shouted vocals simple beats and 80s style synths. venganza y seduccion means vengeance and seduction and features suggestive panted echoing vocals over a cosmic disco bassline, while atmospheric chords build in the background, if this sounds strange it s because it is, but the combination works really well in a club.
the b side of the record is much harder and more techno-like - marchante is completely different, aggressive kick drums, a pulsing bassline and siren-like synths bring this track a panicked feel, which is offset by the way the drums build into tough patterns. raid features strange nonsense vocals over a pulsing rhythm track that reminds of old chicago acid, if it wasn t for the strange atmosphere. rebodello is a very welcome addition to the world of dance music.

with veryverywrongindeed about to do its first new label night at fabric s sister club matter three days after this release, the label is expected to get a lot of attention across the web, with interviews coming in ibiza voice, data transmission and a big competition in ra. the track, meanwhile, is inspired by the 1960 s film starring richard burton. with sheridan s classical-music background and his trademark grand piano and orchestral stabs, it s a dark and fluid number - in the spirit of the murky east end gangland tale that inspired it. and on the flip is another up-and-coming uk artist, max cooper, taking the track in a much more epic direction.

good fun horror themed disco lp from germany. featuring members of the boney m family this rare lp first hit our shores in 1977, and has become synonymous with the horror disco lps from the likes of simonettis goblin. containing 7 tracks ranging from even vampires... and dracula goes dreamy which are slower instrumentals, to the more upbeat terror on the dance floor which features bizarre crowd noises and sleazy overtones. the major track on the record, soul dracula has every cliché one would expect from a dracula track: maniacal laughing drrrracu la, catchy background gimmicks that drill themselves into your head and sleazy overtones. this track recently found its way onto quiet villages fragments of fear mix cd!
